What is joint filling work?

Joint filling means installing a semi-rigid filler into control and construction joints in an existing slab, so the edges carry traffic instead of spalling under it. Caulking will not do the job here, and neither will a movement joint sealant. A semi-rigid filler carries load across the joint instead of flexing under it.

Confusing the two causes the most common failure in this scope, so we spell it out on every bid. If a soft sealant goes into a hard-wheeled traffic joint, wheels push it down and extrude it, so the edges lose support and the joint breaks apart as though nothing went in at all.

Why do joints break down?

Hard-wheeled traffic is the main driver. Forklift and pallet-jack wheels hit the unsupported edge of an open joint thousands of times a day, and because concrete edges are brittle, they chip. Once spalling starts it accelerates, because each impact lands on a rougher edge than the last.

Spalled joints then become a maintenance and safety problem. They collect debris, they fail sanitation inspection in food environments, they damage equipment, and they eventually require saw-cutting and patching rather than filling.

How joint filling fits the rest of the floor

Joints get addressed before finishes go down, not after. If a coating or polish goes across an open or failing joint, it follows the joint into failure.

Old filler and joint debris come out first, which is surface preparation work, typically using diamond grinding at the joint edges. After filling and shaving flush, the floor continues into polishing, epoxy, or a polyaspartic coating as specified. Where the slab is also out of tolerance, floor leveling is a separate scope.

Can you replace old failed joint filler?

Yes. We remove the old filler, clean or re-saw the joint, and install a new system to the correct depth.
