What is concrete staining?

Concrete staining is a coloring process that penetrates the surface of a slab rather than sitting on top of it like paint. Because the color goes into the concrete, it does not chip or peel the way a coating can, and it wears with the floor instead of off it. The finished look is translucent and variegated rather than uniform.

That variegation is the point and also the risk. A stained floor shows what the slab is. Every patch, every trowel mark, every place a plumber cut and filled will read through the color. Anyone who wants a flat, consistent, predictable field of color wants a coating, not a stain.

Acid stain, water-based stain, or dye?

The three products behave differently and fail differently, and picking between them is most of the decision.

Dyes are the usual choice under a polished finish because they penetrate deeply enough to survive the grinding and honing passes. Acid stain is the usual choice when the client wants the floor to look like stone. Water-based stain sits between the two.

Why does slab condition decide the outcome?

More than any other service AWSP offers, staining is limited by what is already in the building. A coating covers. A stain reveals.

Old adhesive residue blocks stain and leaves ghost patterns. Patch material takes color differently than the original slab, so repairs read as repairs. Curing compounds and sealers stop penetration entirely. Efflorescence and hard water deposits change the reaction. Two slabs poured on different days in the same building will take the same stain differently.

None of that is a reason to avoid staining. It is a reason to look at the floor before promising a result. AWSP does test areas on the actual slab so everyone sees the real outcome on the real concrete before the whole floor is committed.

What preparation does concrete staining in Denver require?

The slab has to be clean, open, and free of anything that blocks penetration. That means removing old coatings, adhesives, curing compounds, and sealers, then opening the surface enough for the product to get in without opening it so far that the floor looks scoured.

Diamond grinding handles almost all decorative prep, because it leaves the smooth CSP 1 to CSP 3 profile these finishes want. Shot blasting is generally too aggressive for a floor that will be stained and left visible, though it has a role in stripping heavy coatings before final grinding. Both sit under concrete surface preparation.

How does a stained floor get protected?

Stain adds color and nothing else. It provides no wear resistance, no stain resistance, and no gloss. The protection comes from what goes over it, and that choice matters as much as the color.

  • Polishing with a densifier, which hardens the slab itself and produces a finish that maintains with a floor machine rather than a recoat
  • Densifying and sealing for a lower-cost protected surface
  • Polyaspartic topcoat where the floor needs a film, fast return to service, and UV stability

A polished and dyed floor is the most durable of these and the most expensive up front. It also has the lowest maintenance cost over its life, because there is no film to wear through and recoat on a cycle.

What is the difference between staining and dyeing concrete?

Stain colors concrete through a reaction or by depositing pigment in surface pores, producing a translucent, variegated look. Dye uses much finer particles that penetrate more deeply and produce a more uniform, more saturated color. Dyes are typically used under polished finishes, stains where a mottled stone-like appearance is wanted.

Will a stained floor look the same everywhere?

No, and that is inherent to the product rather than a defect. Staining reacts with the slab, so it varies with the concrete underneath. Patches, cuts, and pours from different days will read differently. Anyone who needs uniform color should be looking at a coating.

Can you stain a slab that has old glue or coating on it?

Only after removing it. Adhesive residue, curing compound, and old sealer all block penetration and leave ghosting. Grinding takes them off first, and AWSP does test areas afterward to confirm the slab will take color evenly.

How long does a stained concrete floor last?

The color is permanent because it lives in the concrete. What wears is the protective layer over it. A polished and densified floor maintains with routine cleaning for many years. A sealed or coated floor needs periodic recoating depending on traffic.

A slab carrying three layers of adhesive, a patched trench down the middle, and a sealer nobody documented is a different project entirely.

The variables that move the number are what has to come off, how many grinding passes the finish requires, whether the floor is being polished or sealed afterward, and how much edge and detail work the space carries. Columns, alcoves, and stairs are slow. Open field is fast.

How is a stained floor maintained?

Maintenance depends on the protective layer rather than the color underneath. A polished and densified floor cleans with a neutral cleaner and an autoscrubber, and it responds to periodic burnishing rather than recoating. There is no film to fail, which is why polished floors dominate high-traffic retail and institutional work.

A sealed floor needs recoating on a cycle set by traffic. A coated floor lasts longer between recoats but costs more to renew when the time comes. None of these are difficult to maintain, but all of them do worse under harsh alkaline cleaners than under the neutral products the manufacturer specifies.
