Concrete surface profile, written CSP, is the roughness of a prepared slab measured against a defined standard. It is the single specification that decides whether a coating stays bonded, and it is the one most often ignored on a bid sheet. If a coating manufacturer calls for CSP 3 and the floor is delivered at CSP 1, the warranty is void whether anyone says so or not.

What the CSP scale is
The International Concrete Repair Institute publishes nine reference chips, CSP 1 through CSP 9, running from nearly smooth to heavily fractured. They are physical rubber replicas. A floor is verified by holding the chip against the prepared slab and comparing, not by estimating.
The scale is not a quality ranking. CSP 9 is not better than CSP 2. Each number is correct for a particular coating thickness, and going rougher than specified wastes material and can leave profile peaks telegraphing through a thin film.
The concrete surface profile scale in practical terms
CSP 1 and 2. Nearly smooth to light texture. Produced by grinding. Correct for sealers, thin penetrating products, and polished concrete, which is a finish rather than a coating.
CSP 3. Light shot blast or medium grind. The most commonly specified profile in commercial work. Correct for coatings in the 10 to 20 mil range, which covers most roll and squeegee applied epoxy and polyaspartic systems.
CSP 4 and 5. Medium to heavy shot blast. Correct for self leveling systems and coatings in the 20 to 40 mil range, and for most moisture mitigation membranes.
CSP 6 through 9. Scarifying, scabbling, and hydrodemolition. Correct for troweled mortar systems, overlays, and repair topping at a quarter inch and above. These are removal profiles, not coating profiles, and they show up on repair scopes more than on flooring scopes.
The governing rule is simple. Thicker system, rougher profile. The coating has to have enough mechanical key to hold its own mass.
How the profile actually gets produced
Grinding refines and flattens, landing in the CSP 1 to 3 range in normal use. Shot blasting fractures and textures, landing in CSP 3 to 5 and higher as shot size and wheel speed increase. Scarifying and scabbling are impact removal and produce the top of the scale.
Acid etching produces no reliable profile at all. It leaves residue, it depends on rinse quality, and it does not remove contamination. It has no place on a commercial coating scope, and most manufacturers now say so in their own literature.
Why profile is the failure point
A coating bonds mechanically. The resin flows into the texture, cures, and locks. Too smooth and there is nothing to lock into, so the film releases in sheets under traffic or thermal movement. Too rough for the film thickness and profile peaks sit proud of the coating, wearing through early at every high point.
Two other conditions ruin a correct profile. Contamination left in the texture means the coating bonded to the contaminant. And moisture driving up through the slab means vapor pressure works at the bond line from underneath regardless of how good the profile is. Both are more common causes of failure than the profile number itself, which is why surface preparation and moisture mitigation belong in the same conversation.
How to write concrete surface profile into a scope
Name the profile, name the standard, and name the verification. A usable line reads: prepare slab to ICRI CSP 3, verified with ICRI comparison chips at a minimum of one location per one thousand square feet, documented photographically before coating.
That single sentence removes the ambiguity that most disputes come from. It also tells you whether a bidder knows the work. A contractor who cannot tell you what profile their method produces is guessing.

If the slab will not hold the specified profile, which happens on soft or over troweled concrete, we say so before the coating is on the floor rather than after.
