Shot blasting vs grinding is the first real decision on most concrete surface preparation jobs, and getting it wrong costs either money or schedule. Shot blasting is faster and more aggressive across open floor. Diamond grinding is more precise, reaches everywhere, and leaves a smoother surface. Most commercial projects use both.
What is the difference between shot blasting and grinding?
Shot blasting fires steel shot at a concrete slab at high velocity, stripping coatings and contaminants and leaving an aggressive textured profile. The machine recovers and recycles the shot in a closed loop while a vacuum captures debris. Diamond grinding uses rotating diamond-segment tooling to abrade the top layer of the slab, cutting rather than impacting, and leaving a flatter and smoother surface. Blasting suits large open areas and thick-build coatings. Grinding suits edges, detail work, and any floor that will be polished or left visible.

Shot blasting vs grinding: when blasting wins
Choose shot blasting when the floor is large, open, and headed for a thick-build system. A warehouse slab taking an epoxy body coat is the textbook case. The profile is aggressive enough for a heavy coating to key into, the production rate makes the schedule work, and the cost per square foot drops as the area grows.
Blasting also wins when the building cannot tolerate much dust and the area is open enough for a large machine to work. Because the shot is recovered and recycled inside the unit, very little escapes.
Where blasting struggles is anywhere the machine physically cannot go. It leaves an unblasted band at every wall, column, and doorway, which is why blasting jobs are almost never blasting-only jobs.

Shot blasting vs grinding: when grinding wins
Choose grinding when the work is detailed, the finish matters, or the floor plan is broken up. Tenant spaces cut into rooms, corridors, stairs, and anything with a lot of perimeter relative to field area all favor grinding.
Grinding is also mandatory ahead of polishing. A polished floor is a ground floor taken through progressively finer tooling, and no amount of blasting substitutes for that first cut. The same is true of decorative work, where an aggressive blast profile would show through a stain or dye.
The tradeoff is production rate. Over a very large open slab, grinding is slower and costs more, and a contractor proposing grinding-only on a 100,000 square foot warehouse is either charging for it or planning to run out of schedule.

Why most projects use both
The shot blasting vs grinding question usually resolves to both. On a typical commercial floor, blasting covers the open field and grinding takes the perimeter, corners, doorways, columns, and any area the blaster cannot reach. Running both is not indecision. It is how you get a consistent profile across a whole floor without paying grinding rates for the entire area or leaving an unprepared band around every wall.
The practical question to ask a contractor is not which method they use. It is whether they own both. A contractor with only one machine will recommend the method they own regardless of what the slab needs, and the change order arrives later.
What profile does your coating actually require?
This is the part that settles the argument. Coating manufacturers specify a minimum Concrete Surface Profile in their data sheet, using the scale the International Concrete Repair Institute publishes in Guideline 310.2R. A thin-film polyaspartic may call for CSP 2. A thick urethane mortar may call for CSP 5 or higher.
Match the method to the specified profile and the debate resolves itself. A floor delivered below the specified CSP voids the manufacturer warranty whether or not the coating fails, and the contractor who prepped it owns that conversation. Reference: International Concrete Repair Institute.
What about dust and silica?
Both methods generate respirable crystalline silica and both are controllable. Shot blasters recover and recycle shot in a closed loop with integrated vacuum. Grinders run a HEPA vacuum attached at the head. Either can run in an occupied building with proper containment.

Neither is better in general. Shot blasting is faster and cheaper across large open slabs and produces a more aggressive CSP 3 to CSP 6 profile. Grinding reaches edges and corners, leaves a smoother CSP 1 to CSP 3 surface, and is required before polishing. Most commercial projects use both.
Which is cheaper, shot blasting or grinding?
Shot blasting is cheaper per square foot on large open floors because it moves faster. Grinding is cheaper on small or broken-up areas, where a large blaster cannot cover enough ground to justify mobilizing it.
Can you polish a floor after shot blasting?
Not directly. Shot blasting leaves too aggressive a profile for a polished finish. The slab has to be ground afterward, taking it through progressively finer tooling. Blasting can still be useful first to strip a heavy coating before grinding begins.
Does shot blasting damage concrete?
Not on a sound slab. It removes the surface layer by design. On soft, deteriorated, or poorly finished concrete an aggressive pass can pull material, which is why the slab gets assessed before the method is chosen.
