Concrete grinding is a surface preparation method that uses rotating diamond-segment tooling to abrade the top layer of a slab. It removes coatings, adhesives, laitance, and high spots, and leaves a flatter, smoother surface than shot blasting does. Grit selection controls how aggressive the cut is and how the floor looks when the crew is finished.

When does concrete grinding in Denver make sense?

Grinding is the right call when the work is detailed, the finish matters, or the area is too broken up for a large machine. It reaches edges, corners, doorways, and stairs that a shot blaster cannot touch, and it is the only correct starting point for a floor that will be polished.

Concrete grinding or shot blasting?

Grinding is slower per square foot but reaches everywhere and leaves a refinable surface. Shot blasting is faster across large open slabs and leaves a more aggressive profile. On most real projects the two run together, with blasting covering the open field and grinding handling the perimeter and detail work.

What CSP profile does grinding produce?

Diamond grinding typically produces a Concrete Surface Profile of CSP 1 to CSP 3, depending on grit and the number of passes. That is a smoother profile than shot blasting delivers, which is why grinding suits thin-film coatings, stains, and polish while blasting suits thick-build systems.

What tooling does AWSP run?

Metal-bond diamonds for the aggressive opening cuts. Resin-bond diamonds for refining and polishing passes. PCD tooling for adhesives, mastics, and coatings that would load up a conventional segment. Crews match grit to the slab and to whatever the next system requires, not to whatever is already on the machine.

Every grinder runs a HEPA-managed vacuum at the head. Crews carry portable generators, so a building with no power or a de-energized panel is still workable. Crew depth is 10 to 15 cross-trained people, and mobilization on most projects is 24 to 48 hours.

How a concrete grinding job runs on site

Most schedule problems on a concrete grinding Denver project trace back to something nobody checked before the machines showed up. AWSP runs the same sequence every time so the surprises happen during the walk instead of during the pour of the finish system.

Site walk and slab assessment. Crew leads check what is actually on the floor, whether it is one coating or three, where the high spots sit, how the joints are holding up, and what the slab is doing at the perimeter. Old buildings routinely carry adhesives nobody documented.

Opening cut. Metal-bond diamonds take the first aggressive pass and establish the profile. This is where coatings, mastic, and laitance come off and where the crew finds out whether the assessment was right.

Refining passes. Progressively finer tooling brings the surface to whatever the next system specifies. A slab going under epoxy stops early. A slab being polished keeps going.

Edges and detail. Handheld grinders take the perimeter, corners, doorways, columns, and stairs. On a blasted floor this is the entire grinding scope.

Cleanup and verification. Vacuum, verify the profile against the manufacturer data sheet, and document what was delivered. If the coating fails two years later, that record is what settles the argument.

Can grinding run in an occupied building?

Yes, and this is where grinding earns its cost premium over blasting. Vacuum-at-the-head dust collection plus HEPA containment keeps the work zone isolated enough to run in a building that never closes. Crews schedule around your downtime, including nights and weekends.

What happens after grinding?

A ground slab is a prepared substrate. Most projects continue straight into the finish system with the same crew, which removes the handoff where schedules usually slip.

What does concrete grinding in Denver cost?

Price follows square footage, slab condition, what has to come off, how many grit passes the finish requires, and access to the work area. Removing mastic from a 2,000 square foot tenant space and opening a 40,000 square foot warehouse slab are different jobs with different numbers. It would, uncontrolled. AWSP runs a HEPA vacuum attached at the grinder head and adds containment where the building requires it, which is what allows the work to run in occupied space under the OSHA silica standard.

Can grinding level a floor?

Grinding removes high spots, which improves flatness. It cannot fill low spots, because it only takes material away. A floor with real elevation problems needs self-leveling underlayment over the existing slab, which is a separate scope.
